Time to apply for the second round of the Early Literacy Initiative!

Beginning in 2010, the Department of Libraries (DOL) and the Vermont Center for the Book (VCB) have been partnering on a statewide early literacy initiative for babies and toddlers called ELI. Thirty Vermont libraries are currently involved in the program, bringing early literacy experiences to children, parents and childcare providers. The training, based on research on how babies and toddlers learn, will improve your storytimes and help you introduce concepts of early literacy to parents and caregivers. We have combined the Beginning with Mother Goose Program with ALA’s Every Child Ready to Read program and customized the whole for Vermont.  The training for this second group will begin with a two day conference at the Lake Morey Resort in September. Our trainer for the first day will be Saroj Ghoting, one of the librarians who began ALA’s program, Every Child Ready to Read, and who wrote a great book on the topic:  Early Literacy Storytimes at Your Library. On the second day we will focus on making connections between Beginning With Mother Goose and Every Child Ready to Read with time built in for planning and discussion.

Funding for this initiative is provided by the Winnie Belle Learned Fund of the Vermont Public Library Foundation through the generosity of Dr. Burnett Rawson with the assistance of a Henderson grant through the Vermont Center for the Book.

If you choose (and are chosen) to participate in this program you will need to do the following things:

  • Attend 3 trainings in 2011 and 2012. The first training will be held on September 13 and 14, 2011 at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee; the second will be in spring, 2012, and the third in fall, 2012.
  • Submit a plan for holding family BWMG programs to VCB by October 14, 2011 (one month after the first training).
  • Hold and report on six early literacy storytimes between the September training and the spring, 2012 training.).
  • Pay $90 as a match to the funding provided ($90 per library).
  • Hold at least one training for childcare providers in 2012.
  • Keep statistics and participate in assessment and evaluation.

If you are one of the lucky 30 libraries chosen, you will get:

·        Training as outlined above. This includes an overnight at Lake Morey, and all meals during the conference.
·        15 sets of Beginning with Mother Goose Books to give to families
·        A five-in-one easel that can be used as a magnetic board, flannel board, chalkboard or holder for big books.
·        Handouts for parents on how to incorporate early literacy activities into their lives.

If you are interested, and are able to make the commitment, please fill out the application form and send to Grace Greene (grace.greene@state.vt.us) by June 30, 2011. Selection of the 30 libraries will be done by the middle of July.
