Each year we offer two of the four 5-day core workshops required for public librarian certification. This year we are teaching Collection Development and Cataloging and Organization.*

We are providing technology workshops including workshops on interlibrary loan, first aid for computers, and on technology trends with the always enthusiastic Linda Braun.

Other highlights of 2012 include workshops on libraries and legal responsibilities, grant writing, disaster preparedness and response, legal reference, medical reference, adult programming, and strategic planning**.

Youth services will be supported with “Dream Big: Read!” (summer reading program), Tweens and Digital Storytelling, and the perennial favorite, Materials Review.

There are several other workshops in the works. When they are finalized, I will send out notices to let you know.

Please don’t forget about the many mini-workshops we offer at your convenience. Contact your regional consultant for more information.

*Due to the retirement of DOL’s head of technical services, the details of this year’s cataloging workshop will be decided in the coming months.

** The dates have been set for the strategic planning workshop, but the venue will be determined based on where the majority of attendees are located.

Privacy and Security Risks in Higher Education (EDUCAUSE)

Privacy is a major and often underappreciated risk area for institutions of higher education. Many data security breaches, for example, are not the result of high-tech hacking, but of low-tech blunders made by faculty and staff – lost USB drives or laptops, data improperly placed on unauthorized servers, etc. Beyond data security, schools face liability for breaches of confidentiality, failure to share personal information when necessary, failure to address cyberbullying and harassment, and improper surveillance. Professor Solove will provide advice for how institutions of higher education can reduce the risk of having a privacy fiasco by discussing a series of case studies involving topics such as confidentiality and people in distress; outsourcing; data security; and online social media.

We encourage you to attend all three, but we welcome you attend whichever programs you can. The building blocks of project management include basic concepts such as the importance of setting priorities and deadlines, making sure the chain of command is known to all, and why it is necessary to check in with your team mates more than once a year. Topics include aligning project management with your strategic plan, anticipating problems, writing and sharing your plans, and knowing when it is time to stop. Part 1 of 3
WordPress for Library Websites (and more!) (Carterette Series Webinars)

Does your organization need a new web site? One that is more dynamic, easy to update and can easily incorporate social media and other ways to communicate with your library’s patrons/customers? WordPress (free, opensource) may be the answer. WordPress is a powerful web Content Management System (CMS) that has grown far beyond its origins as a blogging tool.

WordPress can be used to power your library website and help you build a dynamic web presence for your library, school, personal web site, business or other project. Its ease of use and flexibility make it a perfect choice for libraries that are struggling to keep their websites up to date and/or looking for a more up-to-date look for their website. Its extensibility via plugins and other customizations make it a great choice for more complex sites as well.

This webinar will cover:

Examples of sites built with WordPress

Why WordPress is a great choice for schools & libraries

Hosting options and requirements

WordPress.com vs WordPress.org

Making it look great: Themes

Building blocks of WordPress: Posts & Pages

and more!

You’ll leave the webinar with an understanding of how to get started building your own WordPress site and be able to evaluate whether WordPress is the right solution for your library’s needs.

The presenter, Polly-Alida Farrington, is a consultant and the owner of PA Farrington Associates, with more than 15 years’ experience providing technology-related training, web project development, and consulting services to libraries, library systems, and schools. A former academic librarian, she has 17 years’ experience in reference, government documents, interlibrary loan, and technology. She and Kyle Jones are the co-authors of Library Technology Reports, April 2011 (47:3), Using WordPress as a Library Content Management System and the forthcoming title: Learning from Libraries that Use WordPress: Content-Management System Case Studies and Best Practices (2012, ALA Editions). Ebooks, Discovery, and the Library (Carterette Webinar Series)

Publishers, authors, booksellers, and librarians have traditionally thought of discovery as something that happens in a physical place. A patron browses the shelf, a librarian offers some reader’s advisory, a new author is picked up from an artfully created display. Online discovery lags behind, despite Amazon’s best efforts. People still pick books up based on word of mouth. Libraries, with entire sections of staff devoted to helping people pick out books, are word of mouth engines, but struggle to prove our worth to the rest of the book ecosystem. Ebooks make that even more difficult when the library as place is taken out of the equation. This session will explore some possibilities for libraries as channels of discovery in an ebook-dominated market.

Kate Sheehan is the Open Source Implementation Coordinator for Bibliomation, a consortium of public and school libraries in CT. She has been the Coordinator of Knowledge and Learning Services at Darien Library and the Coordinator of Library Automation at Danbury Public Library, which was the first library to implement LibraryThing for Libraries. Prior to joining Danbury Public Library, she was a technology and reference librarian at both Hamden Public Library and the Ferguson Library in Stamford, CT. A graduate of Smith College, Kate’s post-college experiences in the corporate workplace inspired her decision to get an MSLIS from Simmons. She finished library school in December of 2003 and has been happily ensconced in the public library sphere since then. When she’s not coordinating, she blogs at loosecannonlibrarian.net and at ALA TechSource.

This webinar will give library staff practical knowledge about the information needs and the role of the caregiver. At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will understand the spectrum of caregiving topics, from daily tasks to the issues and challenges facing people who are in caregiver situations and be aware of caregiver resources for specific conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

The iPad and Communication Transitions for Young Adults (Accessible Technology Coalition)

As children who use communication devices become young adults, their environments, needs, and interests are likely to change quickly and dramatically. The vocabulary and equipment that they have previously used will need to change accordingly. Because of the flexibility and “normalcy” of the iPad, it may be uniquely well suited to address these changes at a relatively low cost. This webinar will provide information on apps for the iPad that are well suited for the changing needs of the child as they transition from high school to higher education or a work environment.

Maybe your library transformation should begin with a thorough review of the items that are collecting dust, on both your physical and virtual shelves.

The Public Library Association (PLA) is offering their celebrated “Turning the Page” advocacy training in a free guided online series of classes. This program is made possible nationwide by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The online course lasts 6 weeks and includes a weekly webinar facilitated by the PLA. During the 6 weeks, students will build their own Advocacy Work Plan. This is a wonderful opportunity for library staff, trustees and community supporters. Registration for the next session opens September 15.

DOL Consultant Michael Roche and a group of Vermont librarians, trustees and Friends participated in the original “live” version of this training in St. Louis, Missouri and reported that it was a fantastic experience. Now all interested Vermonters are able to take the course online – at no cost.

What is advocacy? For the purposes of this training, advocacy includes “building strategic partnerships with local groups, developing effective approaches that demonstrate and communicate a library’s value, and delivering messages about the importance of libraries.”

Why is this important for Vermont? Vermont continues to face many serious economic and societal challenges and our libraries provide essential services to citizens and help build strong communities. In order for libraries to thrive in a time of budget cuts and competing spending priorities, we must be more effective in communicating the value of our libraries. Through the work of citizen advocacy we can ensure that our libraries are adequately funded and staffed to offer services that promote and support economic and workforce development, basic literacy and digital literacy, an informed citizenry, personal and cultural enrichment and life-long learning, and use of e-Government and other online information resources.

Who should participate? “Turning the Page” is open to ANYONE and we especially encourage librarians, trustees and Friends of the Library to take advantage of this opportunity. During the next year DOL will work to build a statewide library advocacy network. This course is a good base for developing this network and for further discussions and programs to strengthen our libraries through advocacy activities.

What should you do? If you are a library staff member, trustee, Friend, or a community supporter who wants quality library service and healthy communities, we invite you to work the “Turning the Page” course into your schedule.

The PLA online course is available for free in a facilitated manner three times:

Genre headings can be very useful in library catalogs in order to let patrons search for particular types of items. In May of this year, the Library of Congress changed how its genre headings are handled, separating them from subject headings and establishing a separate thesaurus, the Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT). In this session, Emily Nimsakont, the NLC’s Cataloging Librarian, will give an overview of how genre headings are used and discuss the effects of this decision by the Library of Congress.

This free webinar provides a quick tour of some of the more common mistakes even experienced library professionals make (regardless of one’s level of education). Although it is about writing basics, this webinar focuses on workplace applications: what can improve how your words impact the readers at work, whether they be your employers, co-workers, employees, or customers. Topics include punctuation, jargon, keeping words “in agreement,” too many words, using the wrong words, and failure to edit, as well as using social media abbreviations (texting shorthand) in workplace documents.

Ten Tips for Basic Cataloging with Melissa Powell (LE@D)

Making information accessible is the key to a relevant library. You are handed materials and asked to make it easy for people miles away to find them. The power a simple, accurate, and concise record has to draw a straight line from the question to the answer is amazing! It doesn’t need to be complicated, and the logic in it is beautiful.
Learn some tips that might help improve a new cataloger’s competence and confidence, whether you are that new cataloger, or someone who supervises or trains new catalogers. Did you know you can break the rules? That the age of the reader counts? That there are times when you should not catalog? And sometimes, simple is better?

Genre headings can be very useful in library catalogs in order to let patrons search for particular types of items. In May of this year, the Library of Congress changed how its genre headings are handled,
separating them from subject headings and establishing a separate thesaurus, the Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT). In this session, Emily Nimsakont, the
NLC’s Cataloging Librarian, will give an overview of how genre headings are used and discuss the effects of this decision by the Library of Congress.

How to Identify and Manage Critical Project Risks (American Management Association)

In this Webcast you’ll discover ways to understand when it’s a good idea to manage a risk and when it may not be. It’s obvious that doing something about a risk that actually occurs makes sense. Doing nothing for a risk that does not happen is also sensible (or perhaps just lucky). However, some risk management we undertake will ultimately prove to be unnecessary and some risks we choose to accept may lead to disaster. Project managers must use qualitative and quantitative assessment techniques to rank order risks, and then work out responses to deal with the ones that warrant the effort. To improve the effectiveness of your efforts, you must carefully consider each identified project risk in terms of history and impact and particularly in consideration with your tolerance for consequences.

Information seekers have unprecedented avenues to acquire information, many of which do not involve the library. Unless users can see an immediate benefit in time, effort, and quality, they will continue to use the avenues from their “real” lives instead of venturing into the library space. Voice of the Customer is a Bellevue University initiative which identifies the expectations of the student and calls for a change to the institutional environment. This is a top-down call to action. Finding a Legal Comfort Zone on the Web (WebJunction)

Allowing the public to contribute to, comment on and otherwise engage with your library’s website content can be a scary thought, fraught with bogeymen real and imagined, lined with both success and horror stories, and seemingly paved with difficult policy decisions. But it really doesn’t have to be that way. Eli Neiburger will present on how to move squeamish colleagues, administrators, or trustees to a point where web initiatives can be understood as less risky than the daily act of unlocking the front doors. He will demonstrate how to structure engagement on the web so that it doesn’t require another written policy. Joining Eli will be Barbara Jones from the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom, who will focus on how the overarching principles of intellectual freedom apply to user engagement, access, and information literacy programming on social media. She will show how these new and sometimes intimidating technologies do fit the intellectual freedom and privacy principles that American Library Association has embedded in the Library Bill of Rights and Its Interpretations. Barbara will provide examples of how these very idealistic statements can be reflected in practical policy statements and inform best practices at the local level.
